7 common mistakes in the kidney diet (and how to avoid them)

Many patients do their best but make mistakes that quietly sabotage their diet. Here are the 7 most common ones, and how to avoid them.

1. Using "light salt" or salt substitutes

Many of them replace sodium with potassium, which is dangerous for you. Use spices, not substitutes.

2. Ignoring hidden phosphorus

The "phos-" additives on labels are absorbed almost entirely. Always read the ingredients.

3. Reusing the cooking water

That is where the potassium you removed with double cooking ended up. Do not use it for soups.

4. Eating too much protein

More protein is not better: it overloads the kidneys. Controlled portions of quality protein.

5. Believing "natural" is always safe

Bananas, avocado and nuts are natural, but high in potassium or phosphorus.

6. Neglecting fluids

Soups, gelatin and ice all count as fluid if you have a restriction.

7. Giving up for lack of flavor

Eating without flavor leads to quitting. Learn to season with spices so the diet is sustainable.

Your exact limits depend on your stage and your nephrologist. This guide is a starting point, not a replacement for medical advice.
