How to read nutrition labels if you have kidney disease
The supermarket is full of traps for your kidneys, hidden in the labels. Learning to read them in 30 seconds protects you from sodium, potassium and hidden phosphorus.
1. Check the sodium
Look for less than 140 mg per serving. Careful: the "serving" is usually smaller than what you actually eat.
2. Hunt down the hidden phosphorus
In the ingredient list, avoid anything starting with "phos-": phosphate, phosphoric acid, polyphosphates. It is absorbed at almost 100%.
3. Watch for potassium
It does not always appear on the label, but be wary of salt substitutes ("potassium chloride") and potassium additives.
4. Fewer ingredients = better
The shorter and more natural the ingredient list, the safer it usually is. Ultra-processed foods concentrate additives.
